Smeeth War Memorial Renovation

The very least we owe those who paid the ultimate price is to ‘remember and honour them’

As you drive into the village of Brabourne, from the A20, one of the first things you see is the War Memorial next to Brabourne Church. It is dedicated to those villagers that gave their lives in the First and Second World War.

The war memorial has now been sympathetically restored, the steps restored and a paved area alongside allows safe access from Church Road, while preserving the primrose bank.

Citizenship Award

We in Brabourne are very lucky in having so many people in the parish who put themselves out for others, and to mark this the Citizenship Award is made annually, in memory of Councillor Goodall.    The Award pays tribute to Councillor Goodall, who did a great deal for the community and marks the affection and respect with which he is regarded.

The Citizenship Award is for someone who has worked for the community and for the people.   If you know of someone who has helped others, put themselves out, ‘gone the extra mile’, then please put them forward.   Send nominations (in confidence) to the Brabourne Parish Clerk, Sue Wood (contact details below) or to any member of Brabourne Parish Council, by 12th January, saying why you think your nominee deserves the Award.

The winner will be chosen by Brabourne Parish Council at its January meeting, and the Award will be presented at the Annual Brabourne Parish Meeting in March.

Please send your nomination to:

Mrs S Wood, 14 Sandyhurst Lane, Ashford TN25 4NS 01233 623902

Smeeth War Memorial

More discussion have been taking place over the past few weeks with regard to the refurbishment of the Brabourne War Memorial and estimates have been received for the work on the monument itself and a further estimate for the clearing and redesigning of the present site is expected soon.   Once all the cost implication are available, it is suggested that a public meeting in the Village to which all interested in the project be invited to discuss the matter and look at the various possibilities available to us.

Whilst the resiting of the Memorial is still to be considered, a very firm indication from the War Memorials Trust, the National body responsible for War Memorials  indicates that this should not be undertaken lightly and they strongly recommend leaving the Memorial in its original place”

Gardeners Society

There isn’t a meeting in December and the committee takes this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. The society has an exciting programme for 2017 including speakers, shows, plant sales and coach trips. Our membership numbers have increased over the last few years and now stand at 70. New members will be most welcome; if you would like any further information please contact our secretary, Wendy Sanders, on 01303 813451 or brabournewendy@gmail.com.
